Each class focused on a question and explored and investigated the answers.
Reception children explored crayons at room temperature, we found that they were a solid. After this we learnt what a prediction was and made some great suggestions about what may happen when the crayons are heated. We then placed crayon shavings on a piece of paper and melted them with a hairdryer and observed what happened. We found that the crayons made a paint like texture that could be spread.
Reception discussed different dinosaurs and their adaptions to different environments, e.g. scales, feathers, and spikes. We then explored the different features of dinosaur environments and children were encouraged to create their own habitats and dinosaurs out of play dough and natural objects.
As a class the children learnt more information about birds building nests before they designed their own birds nest. The children the went outside to build their own nest using different materials. The children had to think about the materials they used to insure their nests were strong and weather proof.
In small groups, we used paper and tape to create our own boats. The aim was to try and build a boat to carry the most amount of marbles, before it sinks. We tested our boats in a tray of water and slowly added marbles. We recorded the number of marbles held for each boat and compared the different boat designs.
We discussed the fact that much of our food is wasted every day because it looks slightly wonky or isn’t the right size for supermarkets to stock. The children compared the appearance of apples, pears and carrots and then worked in pairs to conduct a blindfolded tasting and comparison. Many were surprised to find that they preferred the taste of the irregular-shaped food. They might well become champions of wonky food on their next family shopping trip.
