Curriculum Statement
At Mattishall Primary School, we have developed our curriculum offer to ensure that we provide all children with the knowledge and skills that we feel are relevant, and essential to their successes now and in their future education and life long learning.
Our curriculum is ambitious, broad and balanced and is underpinned by the National Curriculum. Through this, we aim to provide children with the skills, knowledge and behaviours for learning that can be applied across all subject areas and in all aspects of life. We value the whole child and balance their academic needs alongside their social, emotional and personal development. We nurture children to have active, inquisitive and creative minds.
Our curriculum is designed to allow our children to make connections across their learning, building on prior learning and leading to a deeper understanding so that learning is purposeful and meaningful. Our approach is designed to allow pupils to master the skills through each sequence of learning. Links are made across subjects where appropriate, however subjects are planned and taught in a discrete manner to ensure a progressive and coherent sequence of specific learning.
Our aim is that the curriculum inspired children to learn and develop a love of learning by:
- providing a high-quality curriculum with a clear pedagogical approach
- developing empathy, confidence and resilience
- recognising what equality, diversity and tolerance means
- equipping them with ‘life skills’ and behaviours for learning
- encouraging individuality
- having high expectations and celebrating success and achievement
- raising aspirations for the present and future
- providing a stimulating environment
- promoting a positive partnership with our parents/carers
- developing independent global citizens of the future.
Our leaders strive for excellence and ensure that we will respond to the challenges of modern life. Our team will provide dedication, commitment, professionalism and receive high-quality evidence-based professionalism to support this, whilst recognising the importance of well-being.
Attitudes to Learning
We aim to make learning enjoyable and to promote a sense of achievement in each child in each lesson.
Children are encouraged to:
- Think for themselves and become increasingly independent and responsible for their own learning.
- Understand that achievement and success are almost always related to sustained concentration and effort.
- Develop an understanding that learning from mistakes can be an integral part of the learning process.
- Understand that they should check and evaluate their work and contribute to this process for the work of others.
- Become aware of their own preferred learning style and the need to develop competence across a range of styles.
- Understand that they have responsibility to ensure that their behaviour supports the learning of others and does not affect it adversely.
- Develop confidence and competence across a wide range of curricular areas.
- Acquire an enjoyment of learning and an understanding that learning will continue beyond high school into adult life.
British Values
We promote the British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and those without faith throughout our themed curriculum.
